Krastova Gora is a locality in the central part of the Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria, near Krastov Vrah (1545 m), from which it takes its name. It is also known as the Rhodope Holy Mountain because of the "Holy Trinity" monastery complex located there.
It is located in the southernmost part of the Plovdiv region, in a south-east direction, on the territory of the municipalities of Lucki and Asenovgrad, between the villages of Belitsa and Mostovo and Borovo. Going along a path from Krastov vrah to the west, next to it is a large fountain with a high chapel, after 150 m you reach the monastery complex, where the most notable objects are the church "Holy Trinity" and the monastic building - all on the territory of the municipality of Laki.
There is a large parking lot on the border between the municipalities, next to it on the territory of the municipality of Asenovgrad are a hotel-restaurant and the other objects of the complex:
• the church "Protection of the Holy Virgin";
• "12 Apostles" complex of 12 chapels, located on both sides of the staircase to Krasta peak with the crucifixion): "St. Septuagints", "St. Apostle Jacob", "St. Apostle Peter", "St. Apostle Paul", "St. Apostle Thomas", "St. Apostle Andrew", "St. Apostle Philip", "St. Apostle Jacob", "St. apostle Simon-Cananite", "St. Apostle Bartholomew", "St. apostle evangelist Marko", "St. Apostle Luke", "St. Apostle Matthew
• 3 chapels, northwest after the peak with the cross: "St. John of Rilski", "St. Three Saints" and "St. Vissarion Bishop of Smolyan").
An arch representing the entrance to the complex was built north of the Church of the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the road from Asenovgrad. About 700 meters southeast of the temple is the Okoto fountain.
You cannot come to this part of the Rhodopes without visiting the village of Shiroka Laka. It is one of the most popular sights around Pamporovo, which enchants with its authentic charm, architecture and local cuisine.
The village is only 15 km from the winter resort and is beautiful in every season. Visit the house-museum of Captain Petko voivoda, the Church of the Assumption, built in 38 days, see the National School of Folk Arts and get lost in the small streets.
If you like mysticism, the Devil's Throat cave near Trigrad is among the sights around Pamporovo that you must visit! It is here that Orpheus descends into the underworld in search of his beloved Eurydice. The spectacular lighting in the cave, the passage through the Roaring Hall, named so because of the underground waterfall, and the stories of the tour guide will transport you to a magical world.
On the walls of the cave you will see the image of the devil, and then you will have to climb the steep steps to get out of the mouth of the cave.
Devil's Throat is located about 50 km from Pamporovo. The road passes through the picturesque Trigradsko gorge, so you will certainly not be bored.
If you are looking for less popular sights around Pamporovo that will give you a different experience, Uhlovitsa Cave is just for you! It is located in a difficult to reach area and you have to reach it on foot. The road is about 1 km. Its length is 460 m, 300 km of which are accessible to tourists.
At the end of the walk, in the cave you will see seven small ponds, arranged in steps. Uhlovitsa is not only among the most beautiful caves in the Rhodopes, but also among the oldest. The distance from Pamporovo is about 45 km, so you can easily go and return within the day.
This is an extremely interesting architectural ensemble that many tourists miss simply because they don't know about it. It is located about 40 km from Pamporovo, in the center of the village of Mogilitsa. The Agushe lodges were built in the 19th century by the order of the merchant Sally Agush - a Bulgarian-Mohammedan.
As you can guess, he was a wealthy man. He had a lot of sheep, he built dairies along the White Sea, so that he could more easily transport his cheese to different parts of the Ottoman Empire. The Agushev Konaks consist of three connected courtyards with residential and farm buildings.
In each yard there is a well, housing for the masters and workers, a stable, a barn and other buildings. We can safely say that this is the largest late medieval feudal castle on the Balkan Peninsula!
It is located next to the village of Koshnitsa, about 35 km from Pamporovo. It is located on the highest elevation in the district and offers an incredible view of the mountain. It is not one of the popular tourist attractions around Pamporovo, which makes it even more interesting. The road to it from the village of Koshnitsa is about 30 minutes on foot.
It goes through a passage cave similar to the Wonder Bridges. You can combine a visit to the "Kaleto" fortress with that of the Uhlovitsa cave and Agushevi Konatsi.
Have you heard of the village of Gradat? Next to it rises the ancient Momchilova fortress. On it, during the summer months, a film about Momchil voivode - the protector of the Rhodopes - is projected. The fortress itself is an interesting historical landmark around Pamporovo, which will give you breathtaking views.
It is located 37 km from the winter resort. You can reach the foot of Momchilova Fortress by car, and then continue for 15 minutes on foot.
It is one of the most intriguing eco-trails in this part of the Rhodopes and one of the most exciting sights around Pamporovo. The trail starts at the end of Smolyan and, as its name suggests, is known for its many waterfalls located along it.
Allow about 4 hours for the hike so you can enjoy the views. Descents and descents, panoramic platforms and water cascades await you along the circular route.
The highest waterfall along the eco trail is Orpheus (64 m.)! It is one of the attractive sights around Pamporovo. Along the way there are built benches and gazebos for relaxation.
At the foot of the Snow White tower is a place with an amazing view, which the locals say inspired Orpheus himself! These are Orpheus Rocks. According to legend, the Thracian singer came here to find solace after the loss of his beloved Eurydice. D
the ice from the edge of the Orpheus Rocks is amazing! It is no accident that they are one of the most visited sights around Pamporovo. They are also easily accessible – follow the road to Snow White Tower and at the foot of it you will see a sign for Orpheus Rocks.
Follow it and in about 15 minutes you will be at the pointed rocks from which you can see the Smolyan Lakes and all the beauty of the Rhodopes.
If you're looking for a 360-degree panoramic view of the Rhodopes, the Snezhanka TV Tower is your place! It is among the top sights around Pamporovo. You can reach it by car.
It is 2028 m high. From its terrace you can see all the ends of the mountain. You can even see the Rozhen observatory, Golyam Perelik peak, Golyam Persenk peak and the Smolyan Lakes. Stunning, isn't it?
If you are looking for a place for a short nature walk that is suitable for a picnic, visit the Smolyan Lakes.
Most often, tourists choose the area with the four lakes, which are among the most iconic sights around Pamporovo. It is great for a picnic, as it also has a barbecue. There are three more lakes, and in the past there were as many as 20.
Are you ready for beautiful views and an alpine trolley ride? All this will happen to you if you go along the "Bride" eco-trail. It is only 5-6 km from the winter resort, therefore it is one of the preferred sights around Pamporovo.
Its length is less than a kilometer and you can easily walk it in about 15 minutes. However, the views and panoramic sites will often be the thing that stops you in your tracks. Set aside an afternoon to leisurely explore, take photos and… descend on an alpine cable car.
It is located at the end of the "Bride" eco-trail and is open during the warm months. It is worth venturing into this extreme landmark around Pamporovo!
